Family Therapy

Every family has its own rhythm, the way it communicates, the way it handles hard moments, the roles each person plays. When that rhythm starts to feel out of step, or when the needs of one or more family members aren't fully understood, it can leave everyone feeling the strain.

Family therapy at Lumina creates space for all of it, to understand each other more fully, and to build a family life where everyone has room to be themselves.

All Families. All Stages.

Lumina works with families at every stage, shape and size. From families navigating a new diagnosis to those who have been living with neurodivergence for years and are ready for deeper support. Blended families, single parent families and families working through significant change are all welcome here.

Families commonly seek support around:

  • A new or recent neurodivergent diagnosis and what it means for the family

  • Parent and child relationship difficulties

  • Sibling dynamics and family tension

  • Communication breakdown between family members

  • Behavioural challenges and emotional dysregulation

  • Parenting a neurodivergent child or young person

  • Blended family challenges

  • Family stress during significant life transitions

  • Grief, loss, or illness within the family

A Neuroaffirming Space

Families supporting neurodivergent members often carry an enormous load, advocating within systems, managing competing needs, and trying to hold everything together while making sure everyone feels seen. That exhaustion is real, and it deserves to be acknowledged alongside everything else.

At Lumina, the neurodivergent experience isn't treated as the problem to be solved. It's understood as the context within which the family exists and is doing their best, and is the starting point for building something that works for everyone.

What to Expect

Family therapy at Lumina begins with individual sessions, time for each family member to share their perspective, their experience, and what feels most important to them, without the dynamics of the group present.

From there, sessions bring the family together, working through the patterns, relationships, and communication that shape how you function as a unit. Over the course of the work, there may be times where the focus returns to individuals before reconvening as a group, the process flexes to meet what the family needs at each stage.
